St. Agnes Academic High School Launches Health Sciences Program with New Lab

St. Agnes Academic High School recently unveiled a health sciences program with a new lab space.

St. Agnes Academic High School, a Catholic school for girls in College Point, Queens, launched its health sciences program, Futures in Medicine, along with its new lab space in September.

In the fall session of Futures in Medicine, 20 competitively selected St. Agnes students learn from Northwell Health Nurse Educators. With support from Northwell Health and Henry Schein, the program's new lab, The Maureen M. Fritch '78 Health Science Lab, is equipped with exam tables, hospital beds, CPR mannequins, blood pressure monitors, defibrillators, AED simulators, and fully stocked medical carts.

"The Futures in Medicine Club is broadening the opportunities our girls will have when applying for jobs and college. We are excited to see this program grow and hope that incoming students will be able to enter into a certified nursing assistant program," says Kathleen Gaughan, assistant principal of student life.

According to Gaughan, St. Agnes Academic High School is committed to staying ahead and offering its girls every possible opportunity in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) field. She hopes that after students go through this program, when they’re applying to colleges, the experience on their resumes will give them an edge. If nothing else, she hopes students will be provided with opportunities to see where their future could take them. There are many medical professions to choose from, but Gaughan says St. Agnes Academic High School wants to give their students exposure to different medical fields so they can start thinking about careers, get some training, and expand their horizons.

"When our girls walked into the new lab, their mouths just dropped. They couldn’t believe this was something that their school has," Gaughan says.
