Ridge Hill Shopping Center to Offer New Children's Gardening Workshop

The six-week program is ideal for children ages 3-8.

The new children’s gardening workshop at Ridge Hill in Yonkers will take place in the community garden located on the South Lawn by Whole Foods. The program will take place on Thursdays from 10-11am from July 11-Aug. 15. Parents can pick and choose weeks without having to commit to all six weeks at once. Parents are encouraged to participate with their children.

The workshops will be held in partnership with Kaleidoscope Garden Design and feature activities including hands-on gardening, mulching, weeding, planting, harvesting, and watering. There will also be a craft component where kids can make things such as paper pots filled with seeds that can be planted outside and salad dressings using herbs grown in the garden. In addition to crafting activities there will be an educational aspect of the program where kids can learn about bees, the environment, and other processes in nature.

“We launched it because we are conscious of the environment,” says Meghann Hongach, marketing director for Ridge Hill. “We wanted a way to sort of bring the community together in a way that can help promote healthy living and healthy eating.”

Each growing season features a number of fresh, seasonal vegetables, herbs, and flowers. This summer kids can help cultivate Zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, eggplants, squash, beans, and peppers among other crops. All sizeable harvests will be donated to Feeding Westchester.
