Exciting Passover Activities and Events for Kids

This year, Passover falls on Friday, April 15 through Sunday, April 23, but we all know that the festivities start up a lot earlier in New York. Families are eager to teach their little ones about the history of this Jewish holiday in fun, creative ways. But between cooking for seder, coordinating guests, attending services, and going about our typical busy days as NY parents, finding exciting ways to include our kiddos can be difficult. After all, a five hour seder doesn’t exactly say kid-friendly. 

That’s why, we’ve rounded up the best of the best in Passover activities and events for NY families. From Passover kids’ books to sing-alongs at museums, we’ve got something for every family. Use our guide to spread the joy, spirit, and history of Passover with your little ones!      

Passover Activities 

Color Printable Passover Pages

Kids love getting crafty and creative, no matter the occasion. If you’re busy cooking a delicious Passover meal in the kitchen, keep your kids engaged with printable Passover coloring pages. Lay out a bunch of different crayons and colored pencils, and let your kiddos choose which pages they want to color. We recommend lining the coloring table with a garbage bag or disposable table cloth, just in case your little ones are tempted to color outside the lines! 

Build a Matzah House

Yummy houses can be made with more than just gingerbread! Try using Matzah to build a kid-friendly Passover dessert. All you need are Matzah crackers, chocolate chips, Nutella, sliced almonds, and shredded coconut. Line your Matzah with Nutella to stick the walls and roof together, and then get decorating! You can put your own take on the Matzah house with other candies that your kids like, so don’t feel like you have to stick to the recipe. Enjoy the house as a midday snack or display it at your seder.      

Recreate the 10 Plagues With Origami

If you’re looking for a challenge, try out an origami craft! This is also great for young children who are still developing their motor skills. In the famous Passover story of the 10 plagues, everything from frogs to wild animals strike the Egyptians. You can easily create origami animals using step-by-step online instructions. As you fold and crease the colorful paper, make sure you tell your kids the story of Moses and the Egyptian Pharaoh so that they can see how their craft relates to Passover. 

Read a Passover Kid-Friendly Book 

What better way to show your kids the meaning of Passover than with a picture book? Grab a blanket and find a cozy spot to have Passover storytime before your guests arrive later. Some of our favorites are A Tale of Two Seders by Mindy Avra Portnoy, The Little Red Hen and the Passover Matzah by Leslie Kimmelman, and Lotsa Matzah by Tilda Balsley. 

Put on a Passover Performance with Finger Puppets

This is such an easy activity that your kids will get a kick out of and learn more about the history of Passover at the same time. All you have to do is download and print finger puppets of the ten plagues: sheet #1 and sheet #2. Then you cut them out and glue or tape them together so that they can wrap around your little one’s fingers. The rest is up to you! We recommend guiding your kiddos through each plague, one by one, using the finger puppets to act it out. You could even let your kids put on a performance for guests later!
