Bake Loaves of Challah for Those in Need on Super Bowl Sunday

Kids can knead for those in need this Super Bowl Sunday.

On Feb. 5, Jewish children will make loaves of challah for New York City families in need as part of the Mega Challah Bake for Kids, according to The Forward.

Challah is braided bread traditionally served on Sabbath and other Jewish holidays. This is the second year of the program, created by Jewish moms across New York City and in partnership with schools, synagogues, and community organizations. More than 1,000 kids are expected to be in attendance.

At the challah bake, children ages 5-13 will prepare two loaves: one to take home and one to be donated to WIN, a homeless shelter in New York City for women and their children. Participants will mix together ingredients and then knead and braid the dough all on-site.

Last year, the kids broke the Guinness World Record set by 426 students making challah in Hong Kong. There were 1,128 kids in attendance at last year’s Mega Challah Bake, during which 1,000 eggs, 1,000 pounds of flour, and 7,000 pounds of water were used.

Visit Mega Challah Bake’s website to register for this year’s program. The event will take place at the Grand Hyatt New York hotel in Midtown Manhattan from 11am-12:30pm. Tickets are $15 per child with a parent or chaperone, and $10 for each additional adult.
