Long Island Students Win Engineering Competition Regional Finals

Long Island Students Win Engineering Competition Regional Finals

Three students from Trinity Regional School on East Northport, Long Island won first place at the regional finals round of DiscoverE’s Future City Competition on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Jackson Kobylarcz, Lillie Smutny, and Andrew McCollum won first place in this year’s Future City Competition. The engineering competition for kids in grades 6-8 is a project-based learning experience to imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. This year’s theme was "The Power of Public Space" and challenged students to create innovative public spaces for a diverse city population.

The regional finals took place at PS 126 Manhattan Academy of Technology in Two Bridges. Students created future cities in large tabletop models using SimCity software, and presented them to a panel of judges.

The Trinity Regional School students will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete at the Future City Competition Finals on Feb. 18-21 during National Engineers Week.

The Future City Competition is now in its 25th year, with more than 40,000 participants each year from 1,350 schools in 37 regions across the country.

Future City was created by DiscoverE, which was formerly known as the National Engineers Week Foundation. Its mission is to create awareness of engineering careers amongst K-12 students.
