Child Care Center in Astoria Now Offering Yoga for Kids

Yoga sessions aim to help kids focus, breathe, move, connect, and relax.

Adventureland Child Care in Astoria partnered with The School Yoga Program to launch a new yoga curriculum for children ages 2-5. The program began Oct. 1, will yoga sessions for children offered on Tuesdays from 9:30-11:30am.

The sessions will focus on SYP's five crucial elements: connect, breathe, move, focus, and relax. Each gives kids the tools they ned to help them become aware of themselves and their surroundings, self-regulate through breathing, maintain engagement, focus, and rejuvenate.

SYP is an effort of Little Flower Yoga, a New York-based organization that is dedicated to offering mat and chair-based yoga in schools for kindergarten to 12th grades. Little Flower Yoga has offered yoga and mindfulness programs to over 600 schools, 130,000 students, and about 7,000 teachers in New York City since its inception in 2006.

“I always felt compelled to build resistance in kids,” says Annette Schroter, owner and director of Adventureland Child Care in Astoria. “The world is not an easy place.”

With two locations in Astoria and Woodside, Queens, Adventureland Child Care Center offers age-appropriate daycare and preschool services for children ages 0 to 5. The Little Learners program is designed to help infants and toddlers to acquire key developmental skills, such as crawling, clapping and eventually walking, in a safe and nurturing environment. In the Discovery program, kids age 2 continue to develop these skills while taking part in activities like science learning, art projects, singing and music. Kids are then introduced to concepts in math, science, reading and writing in the Examiners preschool program. Pre-K for All, the New York City Department of Education free full day pre-kindergarten program, is also available at Adventureland Child Care Center through June. Parents of students receive daily reports updating them on their child’s experience.
