Family-Friendly Brooklyn Folk Festival Announces Lineup

Family-Friendly Brooklyn Folk Festival Announces Lineup

Come listen to some songs or take a fun workshop!

A really awesome music festival is coming to Brooklyn. For the 10th year in a row the Brooklyn Folk Festival will be bringing "down home music" to the heart of Brooklyn. It is a great place to take your kids for a fun day of music, films, games, dancing, and workshops.

The festival will be held from April 6-8 and tickets are available now. It is presented by the Jalopy School of Music, which offers classes and performing ensembles for youth, outreach in local schools, and group instruction and workshops for adults.

I'm especially excited to check out the festival because my kids are of the age where they will really enjoy something like this. Events like these are just one of the many perks of raising kids in a cultually diverse place such as New York City.

According to the website, "The annual festival provides an opportunity for young and old alike to come together, enjoy music, workshops, film screenings, contests and jam sessions and be part of the vitality of our community.  The festival is produced each year with a strong sense of vision and attention to detail with the goal of achieving an event that is more than the sum of its parts."

Here's just some of the family-friendly activities visitors can expect:

  • Puppet Show!  Presented by the Boxcutter Collective – Watch as Judy (a tough-as-nails New York City grandma) rejects the false binary of the left/right political rhetoric, and joins a coven of activist witches to take down capitalism.
  • First ever! Brooklyn Fiddle Contest – Who is the greatest fiddler in Brooklyn!? Find out! Compete for prizes!
  • Elizabeth Mitchell & Suni Paz – Music for kids & adults!
  • Caribbean Brooklyn – Reading from her book and performing the calypsos her mother would sing to her, Danielle Brown uses music to share her experiences growing up Caribbean American in Brooklyn.

There will be also be a banjo throwing contest called The Banjo Toss which sounds way too enticing to miss.

The festival will be helkd at St. Ann’s Church located at 157 Montague St. between Clinton and Henry in Brooklyn Heights. For more information visit brooklynfolkfest.com.
