Turtle Bay Music School to Relocate to a New Space Near Grand Central in September

The historic institution will begin the fall semester at 330 East 38th Street

As part of an overall expansion plan, Turtle Bay Music School (TBMS) will relocate to a modern, customized ADA-compliant facility in The Corinthian Office Condominiums at 330 East 38th Street, conveniently located near Grand Central. It is scheduled to open its doors September 15 for the fall semester.

Just 14 blocks south of TBMS’s current location, the new space will provide an enhanced experience for students, families, and community members by increasing usable space by 50%, including five large group teaching rooms, 13 studios, a bright auditorium, and places to gather throughout the facility. The school’s high-quality programming, from private lessons, early childhood development programs, group classes, free concerts, and community programs for ages 2-102, will continue and the school will now be open seven days a week. One major planned enhancement to the school’s offerings is the launch of a music-centered preschool in Fall 2019.

“TBMS has been providing excellent music education and experiences to the community for 93 years,” says executive director Lorna Jane Norris. “This bold new chapter will allow us to better fulfill our mission by being physically accessible for all populations and abilities, and equip us with the space we need to expand our existing programs and deepen our impact through new initiatives. We live in a time when people are looking to music for healing, joy, comfort and moreover, community. We have to provide a space where everyone can be a part of that.”

“The needs of our community, from those that are very young to our senior citizens, are our first priority in building out the school," says TBMS president Jeffrey Schlosser. "We know how important it is to have a welcoming, safe, comfortable place to engage with the arts – from the exciting addition of a music-focused preschool to the full range of our exceptional programs. This beautiful new space will provide the environment we can grow into over the next 100 years.”

The school will continue its regular programming at its current home at 244 East 52nd Street through June. Construction updates will be made available on the TBMS website throughout the summer.

Turtle Bay Music School is a nonprofit community music school in east midtown Manhattan that serves over 5,000 New Yorkers each year through lessons, classes, and community programs. Founded in 1925, TBMS strives to share the transformative power of music with all those who seek it.
