The Art League of Long Island Offering Fall Workshops for Kids and Teens

Among other fall highlights, the Art League of Long Island is offering a special one-day workshop in “Calligraphy with Howard Rose” on October 20 from 10am to 12pm, where kids ages 7-14 learn the art of beautiful lettering. In addition, the Portfolio Prep class starting November 13 is perfect for teens with plans for a career in the arts, as they will need a portfolio to gain entry to the college of their choice.

The Comic Book Club (ages 13-18), is also available at the Art League and taught by Anu Annam, guides students through research, discussion, and sketchbook drawing exercise to help students discover their own comic voice. Students complete a start-to-finish comic or create one to several zine-style books in the class. In addition, young comic creators are taught how to publish and protect their work. This class also provides art and writing extra-help before and after each session.

Children and Teens who love to draw or paint can take things to a whole new level at the Art League of Long Island in its nine specialized art studios. With more than two dozen classes for ages 4-18 starting between mid-October through late November budding young artists can pursue their passion for the arts with classes that explore nature and animal drawing, abstract painting, cartooning, anime/manga, acrylic painting, pastels, watercolor, colored pencil, collage, clay/ceramics, photography, and fashion design. Rolling registrations are flexible in that classes can be taken at a variety of intervals throughout the year for after-school and weekend sessions.

Art classes are taught by experienced artists/educators who practice what they teach. For example, Richard Torrey who is the cartooning/anime/manga instructor is a published children’s book author and professional illustrator; Anu Annam has exhibited throughout Long Island, in NYC, and India.

The Art League is a non-profit art center offering more than 250 visual arts classes in a large variety of mediums to adults, teens, and kids ages five and up. Classes, workshops, and open studios are offered to beginner, intermediate, and advanced students year-round, in the mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Students can register at any time throughout the year. In addition to the myriad art classes, the Art League also hosts special events, lectures, and art exhibits throughout the year. The large bi-level Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery offers students of all ages inspiration in their artistic journey.

The Art League is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills. For more information call (631) 462-5400 or visit the Art League Long Island website.
